Travel and accommodation arrangements

Jodrell Bank Observatory is about 25 miles south of Manchester. Further information about travelling to Jodrell Bank, including a map, can be found here.

By Train

Jodrell Bank is near to the local line between Crewe and Manchester. Trains run approximately once per hour between 7am and midnight and stop at one or both of the following stations near to Jodrell Bank

In normal working hours, we can collect you from the station if you make prior arrangements. There is a payphone at Goostrey station and just outside Holmes Chapel Station. The local taxi company is Lawtons (phone 534035 )

By Road

From the airport
Follow signs for the M6 motorway south towards Birmingham, via the M56 west. Leave the M6 at junction 18 (Holmes Chapel).

From the M6
Leave the M6 at junction 18 (Holmes Chapel) and head east on the A54 towards the village of Holmes Chapel (about 2 km). At the roundabout take the A535 signposted Macclesfield and Jodrell Bank. Continue for about 6 km, past the Mk2 telescope on the left, and turn left at the sign for Jodrell Bank -- Visitors Entrance. The main entrance is about 1 km on the left. The barriers will open automatically on approach. Follow the entrance lane, keeping right at the fork, through another 2 barriers, past the visitor centre and the library on the left to the staff car park.


Accomodation

Very basic self-catering accomodation is available on-site in the Jodrell Bank Dormitory. The Science Centre has a canteen which is open from about 11am - 3pm, otherwise the nearest pubs serving food are 1.5 - 5 km, and the nearest shops are 4 - 8 km. There is virtually no public transport to Jodrell Bank itself, so the MERLIN staff will arrange lifts as required if possible.

There are a number of farmhouse B&Bs in the area, the nearest is ~1 km but most are 5 - 10 km, and hotels at greater distances. We can assist in booking whatever you require, but please give plenty of notice especially at holiday times.
